NEW Zealand film fans are set to be the first in the world to see the upcoming blockbuster Star Trek Into Darkness.

Paramount Pictures has announced the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel to 2009's Star Trek reboot will debut in New Zealand on May 9 - a week ahead of its release in the US.

It was originally scheduled to be released here on May 16.

Germany and Switzerland will also get the movie on May 9, but New Zealanders will be first to see it because of time difference between the countries.
