New technology helps you 'Find a Doctor' while on holiday

FAMILIES heading to the bush or the beach for holidays, and who want to ensure they find a doctor if they need to, now have a free smartphone application to help.

The new app, launched by Australian Medical Association Queensland on Monday, features a search engine for general practitioners in every town and suburb in the country.

AMA Queensland president Dr Alex Markwell said the new "Find a Doctor" iPhone app could help deal with unexpected medical problems over the festive season.

"So many of us head away from home to spend Christmas and the New Year with family and friends or explore the countryside," he said.

"Getting sick or hurt or running out of prescription medication when you're far from home can be very stressful."

Dr Markwell said the app provided contact and address details, and even directions to medical centres "any time and anywhere" in the country.

There are more than 13,000 doctors and specialists listed and the app also provides instant access to the Poisons Hotline.

It will also be promoted in caravan parks around Queensland with the help of Caravanning Queensland.

Download the free Find a Doctor app at the iTunes store or search online at www.amafindadoctor.com.au.
