Parental leave scheme a good fit
DESPITE criticism from some business groups that the Federal Government's Paid Parental Leave scheme placed an onerous and costly burden on operators, one of the state's biggest employers of women has adapted with ease.
Since July 1, individual employers, not the government, have effectively become the main administrators of this new scheme.
It means you must register with Centrelink's Family Assistance Office and make necessary adjustments to your payroll when a staff member goes on maternity leave and applies for either the baby bonus or the 18 weeks paid at the minimum wage.
When the baby is born, you, not the government, will be making those payments, ensuring financial records are comprehensive.
General manager of human resources at the C&K childcare centre group Amber Simpson said there were about 800 permanent staff members on the payroll, 96% of whom were female.
“In the last year alone, we've had about 30 of our staff accessing parental leave,” she said.
“We fully support the introduction if the scheme, as it does provide families with the financial support they need to have the time they want with their new babies.
“We haven't processed any through the new system, but we're all registered and set to go.
“We have three staff who are about to go off on parental leave who will be applying, and one of those is our payroll officer.
“She has been responsible for putting in place the measures necessary for us to administer the scheme.
“And our payroll department is telling me it hasn't been particularly onerous. But certainly we do have a well-resourced payroll department and we are large enough to have a payroll team, small employers won't have that many.
“It's a change, something new you have to get used to like the introduction of GST and BAS reports, but we think it's a really positive thing for society.”
