THE new Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission was launched in Melbourne today.
It marks the first time Australian charities have had a dedicated regulator.
Legislation creating the commission passed through Federal Parliament earlier this year.
Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury said it was the start of a "new era" for Australia's more than 56,000 charities and not-for-profit outfits.
"In the ACNC, we finally have a dedicated regulator that will drive work to cut red tape for charities and support transparency and accountability," he said.
The ACNC will be responsible for registering and regulating charities, while also working with the sector to provide information and assistance.
