New deal means Jarryd Roughead stays with Hawthorn Hawks

AFL: Champion forward and three-time premiership player Jarryd Roughead is set be a Hawk for life after extending his contract until the end of the 2018 season.

The 27-year-old was due to come off contract at the end of 2016, and would have attracted plenty of interest as an unrestricted free agent.

He will be 31 by the time the new deal ends, the big Victorian saying he was keen to add the extra years now to avoid any discussion about his future.

Taken at pick No.2 in the 2004 national draft (former teammate Lance Franklin went at pick No.5 in the same draft), Roughead has gone on to kick 441 goals in his 207 games for Hawthorn.

He booted 75 goals last season, finished third in the club's best and fairest and was an All Australian.
