Would you like full-cream, skim or camel milk in your coffee?
IF YOU choose to break your scenic drive at a new bakery cafe on Steve Irwin Way, you may find some surprises on the coffee menu.
A "camelchino" worth $14.50 is one of them.
Located halfway between Beerwah and the Glass House Mountains in a small enclave of shops, Glasshouse Grind stocks fresh baked, preservative-free bread, fresh scrolls, savoury and sweet twists and rolls, as well as a range of coffees for the curious-minded.
The price tag of the camel milk coffees has proven no hump for the cafe's health-conscious clientele, Glasshouse Grind co-owner Danny Rouson says.
"It's the health properties of camel milk that are its (biggest) advantage," he said.
Lactose free and high iron levels are among its claims, he said.
Danny said he and co-owner Sharon Toohey launched their new venture 10 weeks ago.
The couple also own Beachmere Bakery in Caboolture, which they've run for 14 years.
Danny said trade at Glasshouse Grind was picking up as word travelled.
Gold Coast resident Diana Hastie stopped for a coffee at Glasshouse Grind on the way to drop off her grandson in Beerwah this morning.
"It's excellent coffee," she said. "I come here every two weeks now."
While Diana settled for a standard cow's milk coffee, Danny said many customers were game to try the Camelchino, which he described as "sweeter" than a cow's milk coffee.
The unusual caffeine offering was a great talking point among customers and gave their cafe a unique "point of difference", Danny said.
At $30 per litre, Danny said he was glad for the supply of fresh milk kept at organic green grocer Everything Good next door.
The milk is sourced from Caloundra's QCamel dairy, the only accredited camel dairy in Queensland, which milks about 10 camels daily.
HEALTH PERKS
- An autism centre in Brisbane is trialling the use of QCamel milk yogurt and probiotics in a diet for children with autism. Improvements to their speech and behaviour have been observed, but a larger study involving 300 children will reportedly soon be under way.
