A NEW national council will be created to advise the Federal Government on sustainability issues, Environment Minister Tony Burke announced on Tuesday.

The National Sustainability Council will be chaired by Monash Sustainability Institute head Professor John Thwaites.

It will provide independent advice on economic, environmental and social sustainability issues, in line with a set of "sustainability indicators".

Mr Burke said the council would help the government "take a longer-term view" on policy decisions.
