Murray survives scare to set up Berdych showdown

HE let slip a two-set lead, but Wimbledon favourite Andy Murray has made it through to his seventh semi-final in London.

Murray looked destined for an easy win over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga when leading 7-6 6-1 but the 12th seed fought back to take the next two to set up a decider.

The Scot regathered, however, to ease home 6-1 in the fifth set to line up a clash with Czech Tomas Berdych on Friday night, eventually winning 7-6 6-1 3-6 4-6 6-1.

Murray was full of praise for his opponent after his superb fightback.

"Tsonga’s one of the best grass-court players in the world," Murray told BBC Sport.

"He came up with some unbelievable passing shots on the run in big moments, started returning better.

"He mixed it up well, so credit to him for fighting his way back into the match.

"He played extremely well.

"That first set was a tough one for him to lose, and I ran away with the second, but he fought right until the end and it was a great match."

Berdych, who lost in the 2010 final, defeated France’s Lucas Pouille 7-6 6-3 6-2.

If that was easy, the same could not be said for seven-time champion Roger Federer, who had to fight back from two sets down to defeat Croatian Marin Cilic 6-7 4-6 6-3 7-6 6-3.

Federer looked dead and buried when Cilic took the opening two sets and had two match points, but the Swiss showed all his fighting qualities to turn things around.

The 17-time grand slam winner will now face Canadian sixth seed Milos Raonic in the other semi-final.

Raonic saw off American Sam Querrey – conqueror of Novak Djokovic – 6-4 7-5 5-7 6-4.
