Mum upset her sons can't wear shorts in winter

ANGELA Connolly wants her two sons to be able to wear shorts as part of their winter uniform at Norwood Secondary College.

She's so adamant about this that she's started a change.org  petition, which has been signed by 227 people.

"The college has reversed a decision to allow male students to wear either shorts or pants at the discretion of the parents and students without proper consultation with the school community," the petition states.

The mother from Croydon, Victoria, is furious that her sons don't have a choice and were given detention for disobeying the uniform code.

She told the Herald Sun: "Most boys dislike wearing pants in winter because some of them play sport and don't feel comfortable."

"Boys go through so many uniforms and pants get ripped quite easily when playing outdoor activities."

Her 16-year-old son, who is in Year 11, was given detention for not wearing the correct uniform.

"All the students who were out of uniform were escorted from period 4 and were held for 30 minutes of their 45-minute lunch break," she said.

"My son sent me a message saying that he was distressed and I phoned the school completely outraged as students were prevented from eating lunch."

She said students deserved a choice of what uniform they wanted to wear irrespective of the season.

Norwood principal Andrew Sloane defended the school's stance, citing a lack of gender equity in allowing boys to wear shorts.

"It was pointed out that the girls were expected to wear a summer and a winter uniform, but that the boys were able to choose to wear shorts all year," Mr Sloane said.

"The college's student leaders were involved in the review and all parents were asked to provide their thoughts via a survey emailed to them. Over 400 responses were received and included in the consideration," he said.

"The outcome of the review is that both girls and boys have a defined summer and winter uniform."

In other words, no shorts for the boys in winter.
