Mum told not to breastfeed baby by smoking woman

A RIVER Heads mum was shocked and angry after being told by an onlooker to "put her boob away" when she was breastfeeding her baby at Splash Lagoon in Hervey Bay.

Jodie Tangikara was breastfeeding her son Kaiden while keeping an eye on her other children when she noticed a woman standing nearby smoking a cigarette within the confines of Splash Lagoon.

Ms Tangikara said she glared at the woman for standing so close to children while smoking.

"The woman glared back at me," she said.

"She said 'I think you should put your boob away. You shouldn't have your boob out around children, especially my children'," Ms Tangikara said.

Ms Tangikara said it was clear there were still people in the community who were uneducated when it came to women's rights and breastfeeding.

Ms Tangikara said she just smiled and continued to breastfeed her baby, ignoring the woman's words.

"I just thought, 'well love, what I'm doing is perfectly legal and what you are doing (smoking) is perfectly illegal'," Ms Tangikara said.

"I kept the peace because there were children around."

She said it was not the first time she had faced harassment because she was breastfeeding.

When one of her older children was a baby, Ms Tangikara said she was approached by someone when she was having lunch and nursing her child.

She said they told her she should go into a change room to nurse her child there.

Ms Tangikara told them that they should have their lunch in the toilets if they were not comfortable with it.

Under the Sex Discrimination Act of 1984, it is illegal to discriminate against a person on the grounds of breastfeeding and it is illegal to ask a mother not to breastfeed her baby.
