Emotional mum lashes out after sex accused found not guilty

DRAMATIC scenes unfolded outside a Warwick courtroom yesterday, as a distraught mother lashed out at the man acquitted of sexually abusing her daughter.

A seven-man, five-woman jury returned a not guilty verdict just after lunch for a 28-year-old man charged with indecent treatment of a child under 12.

The man was accused of indecently touching the girl as she slept earlier this year.

The girl's mother did not react when the verdict was read but approached the man outside.

She yelled at the man outside the courtroom, accusing him of ruining her daughter's life.

Police officers were present at the courthouse and removed the woman from the area following her outburst.

Yesterday was the culmination of a two-day trial, in which jurors heard evidence related to the alleged incident.

The girl and her grandmother attended the Warwick Police Station in March this year to make a statement to police.

The then-eight-year-old told police the man who was staying in her house had touched her inappropriately one night after she had fallen asleep.

The girl said she woke during the attack before going back to sleep.

Defence barrister Robbie Davies highlighted several inconsistencies in the girl's story, including witness testimony that indicated the girl said she was watching a movie in her brother's room that evening.

Mr Davies said that could not have happened as she said, as there was not a TV in that specific room.

The girl initially told police she had her eyes closed at the time but knew it was the man because his hands were bigger than her mother's.

She then went on to say she "sort of" saw the man and recognised him by his tattoos.

The young girl could not give any indication as to when the offence took place.

Following the delivery of the jury's verdict, the man was allowed to walk free from the court.
