Motorists, beware of fake cops

FLASHING blue and red lights are a universal police signal to pull over but motorists are being urged to verify the person behind the lights is indeed an officer.

The warning comes after two men were arrested at the weekend for impersonating a police officer.

Warwick Police Acting Officer-in-Charge Lisa Self said the men, aged 24 and 27, allegedly used a coloured strobe light to intercept a woman driving her car in the early hours of Sunday morning.

When the woman pulled over, the men drove away. Fortunately she was able to get their number plate.

Act Snr Sgt Self said the alleged incident was "very concerning".

"The seriousness in this is that pulling up for an unknown person is a risk to safety and you never know what their motives are," she said.

"It is frightening because we live in a fairly compliant society and people tend to do what police ask them to."

Act Snr Sgt Self said people could take steps to protect themselves from becoming victims to those masquerading as officers.

"People can keep their windows and doors locked until they are about to verify the person is actually a police officer.

"You can do this by sighting their uniform or asking them for ID."

The two men arrested will appear in Warwick Magistrates Court at a later date.

In other police news, officers say a fire that engulfed a Mitsubishi dual cab ute on Guy St last Thursday was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault and was not the result of arson.
