Winterbottom to take staggering lead into Townsville round

FORD'S No.1 man Mark Winterbottom will take a 161-point lead into the next round of the V8 Supercars Championship in Townsville after winning yesterday's 200km race in Darwin.

The man they call Frosty came from 10th on the grid to secure his fourth victory of the season.

Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen charged home to finish a close second, with defending champion Jamie Whincup adding a third place to his two wins on Saturday.

Holden's Craig Lowndes had a challenging weekend after arriving in the Top End in second place on the standings, 101 points behind Winterbottom.

The Queenslander secured his first pole at the Hidden Valley circuit since 2000 for yesterday's race, but came in 17th after damaging a tyre in a collision with Ford's Chaz Mostert.

Top five: M Winterbottom 1451, C Lowndes 1290, J Whincup 1265, F Coulthard 1204, J Courtney 1120.
