TOOWOOMBA'S sole mosque is considering upgrading its fencing following an arson attempt.

Islamic leaders have been liaising with police in a bid to upgrade security after the incident.

Mosque spokesman Professor Shahjahan Khan stressed that the mosque remained open to the community and people of all faiths.

"We had a series of meeting with law enforcement and security people after the incident of arson in the complex," he said.

"The suggestion came that we put fences around the property, which we had already considered."

He said the mosque didn't want to be seen as too protective or exclusive.

"But because it's wide open some people think it's a public property rather than private."

Professor Khan hopes fundraisers will help pay for the fence.

Toowoomba Crime Prevention Sergeant Tony Rehn said police liaised with the mosque's leaders whenever there were heightened tensions around the world.

He said police had made suggestions to the leaders in a bid to show that it was private property and shouldn't be used as a thoroughfare. Sgt Rehn suggested that the car park be delineated.

"There are many people who use it as a shortcut to get to West St," he said.

An alarm system is also being considered.
