Thunderstorms deliver hail, damaging winds to region

6PM: The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting more severe thunderstorms to hit the Toowoomba region tonight.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 5.35pm.

Destructive winds and large hailstones are expected over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Roma, Ipswich, Kingaroy and Stanthorpe.

5.10PM: The Lockyer Valley is on high alert as "very dangerous" thunderstorms spark concerns of flash flooding.

There are reports of localised flooding in parts of the Lockyer Valley.

It comes after Toowoomba was hit by a severe thunderstorm about 4.15pm.

Police have warned motorists to take caution on the Toowoomba Range with mud and water causing slippery driving conditions.

There are rolling stoppages at the moment so that authorities can remove the debris.

Hailstones about the size of golf balls caused damage to some cars and homes.

Powerlines are down in Kearneys Spring on Hume St. 

Motorists are urged to avoid the area as authorities work to repair the powerlines.

Six-hundred homes lost power at Darling Heights just after 4pm. The outage lasted 55 minutes.

Power was cut to 1700 homes in the Pittsworth area earlier this afternoon.

4.30PM: The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of two "very dangerous" thunderstorms sweeping across the Lockyer Valley region.

A severe hail storm has just hit Toowoomba, causing localised flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned that at 4.15 pm very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Laidley, Toowoomba, the area south of Toowoomba and Grandchester.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Rosewood, Helidon and the area south of Helidon by 4.45 pm and Ipswich, Gatton, Grantham, Amberley, Marburg and the area north of Gatton by 5.15 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

4.10PM: A severe hail storm is sweeping through Toowoomba and moving east towards the Lockyer Valley.

Golf ball-sized hailstones have slammed into most parts of Toowoomba.

"Very dangerous" thunderstorms are rolling into the Lockyer Valley, with reports of hail and damaging winds.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to northeast.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Grandchester and Hatton Vale by 4.25 pm and Amberley, Rosewood and Marburg by 4.55 pm.

3.40PM: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that at 3.25 pm very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near the area south of Helidon.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Gatton by 3.55 pm and Laidley, Grandchester and Hatton Vale by 4.25 pm.

Other severe thunderstorms were located near Felton and Pittsworth.

They are forecast to affect the area southwest of Toowoomba and Cambooya by 3.55 pm and the area south of Toowoomba by 4.25 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

2.15PM: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that at 1:55 pm severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Cambooya.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

They are forecast to affect the area south of Toowoomba, the area northwest of Cunninghams Gap and the area south of Helidon by 2:55 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

1.20PM: Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones across the Darling Downs, Warrego and Granite Belt districts over the next few hours.

A storm warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 1.20pm.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Roma, Stanthorpe, Oakey and Mitchell.

The next warning is due at 3.30pm.

12.20PM: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Darling Downs, Maranoa, Warrego and Granite Belt districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of severe thunderstorms that are likely to produce damaging winds over the next several hours.

Locations that may be affected include Roma, Mitchell, Taroom, Injure and Surat.

The next warning is due to be issued at 3.20pm.
