More cash for water efficiency on Queensland farms

ADDITIONAL funding has been made available to improve the efficiency of irrigation infrastructure on properties across regional Queensland in a bid to save three billion litres of water annually in the Murray Darling Basin.

The funding was made available in the latest round of the Healthy HeadWaters Water Use Efficiency Project which is a joint Federal and Queensland Government initiative.

Queensland Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps said on Thursday almost $11.2 million would be allocated to the 12 successful projects across the state.

This funding will allow irrigators to make water storages more efficient and convert from flood irrigation to centre pivot systems," he said.

"It will deliver economic benefits for irrigators and businesses and will help sustain local communities as they adjust to a future with less water."

Mr Cripps said irrigators holding tradeable surface water entitlements in the Lower Balonne and Queensland Border Rivers were eligible for this round of funding.
