Surf club tells patrons to butt out as they ban smoking

MOOLOOLABA Surf Life Saving Club has banned smoking in a move that is believed to be a first for Queensland surf clubs.

The club's smoking area will be designated a tobacco-free zone from December 1 after the club board approved the initiative.

Club general manager Anthony Johnston said the smoking ban was in line with the surf lifesaving movement's aim to promote healthy living.

He said club members had a responsibility to set a good example for its nippers and he hoped it was a step in making smoking less socially acceptable.

"We're just trying to set a good example," he said.

"At the end of the day we make our own choices. We just feel this is in line with the club's values."

It is believed Mooloolaba will be the first surf lifesaving club in Queensland to ban smoking on its premises.

The club's lone smoking area on the beachside balcony will become smoke-free and Mr Johnston said he did not expect it would result in a decline in customers.

Surf Life Saving Queensland applauded the move.

"Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club's patrons, volunteers, staff and visitors will reap the benefits of a healthier environment," SLSQ administration and compliance manager Craig Williams said.

Cancer Council Queensland urged other surf clubs to follow Mooloolaba's lead.

"This is great news for patrons of Mooloolaba Surf Club and will protect people from the harmful effects of smoking," Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said.
