A BEAUTY queen received death threats after she paraded before judges in a swimsuit while carrying her six-month-old daughter.
The Sun reports that Miss Italy hopeful Alessia Spagnulo was subjected to vicious online abuse after saying she was proud of being the first contestant to compete with a baby strapped to her chest.
She said: "Someone posted 'you deserve to die for this', while another said it was 'unnatural' and another told me to stick to being a housewife."
The 24-year-old beauty said that she was "really upset" by the abusive online comments.
She added: "I have never felt this kind of violence before but I am refusing to respond.
"I have put on 2kg since I was pregnant, but they are the most beautiful 2kg I have ever put on."
The Times reports that the former shop worker said that she decided to take her daughter, Chloe, with her to the preliminary heats of the contest because she had no childcare as her partner works in a paper factory and her mother is a nurse.
Other competitors at the Rome event offered to look after the child while she took to the catwalk, but she declined.
Alessia said: "I thought 'Why should I hide her?'"
Judges picked her to be one of the 18 out of 130 competitors to go through to the next round of the competition.
Patrizia Mirigliani, the organiser of the contest, which has faced accusations of sexism, said: "We are happy to give everyone this opportunity and we reward beauty and talent."
Ms Spagnulo worked as a shop assistant but her part-time contract was not renewed when she revealed that she was pregnant.
Alessia added: "My message to other mothers is that your dreams can come true even if you have a child and the 1000 tasks that come with it."
In 1987 Miss Italy winner Mirca Viola was stripped of her title when she revealed she was a mother.
The rules were changed in 1994 to allow mothers to compete.
"If I win, I will dedicate it to Mirca," Ms Spagnulo said.
Last week it was reported the former Miss Peru and a Miss World finalist is in hospital fighting a mystery illness.
Model Valeria Piazza, 27, is reportedly being treated in an unnamed hospital and her health is so fragile that visits are heavily restricted.
