YOUR STORY: Mining camps still around, motels left empty

WHILE I understand life isn't always fair and the same questions are asked over and over, I do still sit here question why large scale mining camps are still allowed to operate in a town where accommodation providers are left with empty rooms almost consistently.

As someone who has worked in a motel for the past three years in Dalby and a camp in town for two years previous to that I have seen the boom rise and fall, I can confidently say we try our best negotiate fair prices (which we are already far below the average price in town), we have provided many crews of men with fantastic meals and accommodation and are now rewarded with an empty motel.

Look if accommodation providers in town are not willing to provide what they need to satisfy workers then okay I get it.

But how about giving them a chance in the first place instead of chucking them all in the camp in town and leaving the 10 or so motels in town with one night drive through if we are lucky.

And yes I am well aware camps are providing a few jobs for locals, but if business increased in motels they would still have the opportunity to have a similar role.

I see it all around town 'shop locally' 'shop local enter this comp'...

How about start at the centre of it all, stick up for local accommodation providers and other local stores will benefit.

The council needs to stand up and do their job for once.
