Midcourter focused on doing her bit for Lightning

NETBALL: Midcourter Laura Scherian says she won't be trying to fill the shoes of Laura Langman, after the star player left the Super Netball champions during the off-season.

The former emerged as one of the most prolific ball distributors in the national league last season, combining well with the more-renowned latter to steer their side to the title.

Scherian could assume an even more commanding role this campaign, following the exit of Langman.

But she won't try to play like the New Zealander.

"I don't think it's about filling anyone's shoes or anything like that," she said.

"It's about what we can all do individually, to bring to the team."

For now, she's simply trying to shore up a spot in the team.

The 29-year-old slotted in at centre for large portions of last year, with Langman at wing defence.

This time around, positions are on the line in pre-season matches.

"Centre is definitely there for me but Maddy (Madeline McAuliffe) has also been jumping in there and having an opportunity."

Scherian's also a noted wing attack, a position occupied mostly by Kelsey Browne last season, while wing defence could be another option for the fleet-footed 167m dynamo.

The Lightning head to Melbourne this weekend for a trial against Melbourne Vixens, after having a recent training game against the New South Wales Swifts at Sippy Downs.

Scherian expects last year's preliminary finalists to pose a stern test.

"It will be an awesome hit-out for us, especially with lots of Diamonds in their team and they've had lots of practice matches and court time," she said.

Their clash with the Vixens is just one of a host of trials, before the season proper gets under way after the Commonwealth Games.

The Lightning have a selection of players who will be involved at the Gold Coast, including Australian representatives Caitlin Bassett and Stephanie Wood.
