Sunshine Coast meth kingpin appeals 'harsh' sentence

A SUNSHINE Coast drug kingpin who distributed large quantities of meth across the state has appealed his sentence in the state's highest court.

Dion Robert Parker, 41, pleaded guilty earlier this year in the Brisbane Supreme Court to drug trafficking and was subsequently sentenced to eight years behind bars.

He was also declared a serious violent offender which means he must serve 80% of the sentence before being eligible to apply for parole.

The court heard Parker trafficked the deadly drug between November, 2011 and July, 2012 using people he met previously in jail to distribute the drug across the Sunshine Coast and to Gympie and Cairns.

Parker's arrest, along with three other men, came following a lengthy joint Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police investigation.

But Parker claims the eight-year sentence he received was too harsh.

Defence barrister Soraya Ryan told the Queensland Court of Appeal on Tuesday the way Parker's sentence was structured would mean he would have to serve 92% of it before being eligible for parole.

She said the sentence was therefore unjust and required adjustment.

Crown prosecutor David Meredith told the court the sentencing judge was well within his rights to structure the sentence the way he did.

He said the fact Parker had served time in jail for similar offences only to be released on parole and immediately return to drug trafficking would have played a part in the judge's sentencing decision.

The court reserved its decision.
