Mercedes points to its compact future with Concept A sedan

MERCEDES-BENZ has unveiled its Concept A Sedan at the Shanghai Motor Show, showcasing the direction of the next generation of its range of compact cars.

The Concept A is basically an A Class four-door sedan, and looks like an attractive evolution of the current CLA shape.

The Concept A's body design has a "purist, surface-focused design featuring reduced lines and gaps," Benz said.    Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Daimler AG, made an even bolder statement by suggesting: "The time of creases is over. It is the next milestone of Sensual Purity and has the potential to introduce a new design era."

Stirring stuff, and on first viewing the Concept A is certainly an attractive design. Short overhangs and Merc's now familiar Panamericana front grille and elongated bonnet looking particularly smart.

Slightly smaller than the current CLA coupe-styled four-door, the Concept A has a sporty look too with its wide wheel arches and large 20-inch wheels.

The success of Mercedes-Benz's current crop of compact cars have seen the brand's sales boom globally and in Australia. Benz has shifted more than two million compacts globally since 2012, while locally we bought over 41,000 Mercs in Australia in 2016 - that's more sales than Honda managed - meaning a rise of over 13% on the previous year.

The Concept A looks close to production ready, so expect to see it and variations on the design on the same compact platform to be in showrooms by next year.
