Megafauna ancients unearthed at MECC

MEGAFAUNA will be unearthed at the MECC tomorrow when interactive demonstrations, hands-on fun and expert talks roll out as part of the Queensland Museum's National Science Week exhibition in Mackay.

Leading researchers and scientists will be on hand to discuss the real and replica fossils on display. including South Walker Creek megafauna - an extinct super sized species of mammals, reptiles and marsupials located about 40km west of Nebo.

Guest palaeontologist Dr Scott Hocknull said the South Walker Creek megafauna were discovered in 2008 by the traditional custodians of the land the Barda Barna people and in annual digs conducted by the museum and BHP scientists since 2008.

The free National Science Week celebrations will run from 10am to 4pm at the MECC Plenary Halls.
