Medical waste washes up at popular beach

MEDICAL waste has washed up on a beach in Mackay.

Resident Lance Payne made the discover at East Point close to a popular swimming spot at Harbour Beach.

"Medical waste "syringes" and drums/containers with stuff in them are now washing up on east point beach," Mr Payne said.

"And there is still heaps of coal washing up as well."

Mr Payne has campaigned for cleaner oceans for a long time, and is often collecting and recording items that have washed up on the beach.

But this latest discovery after TC Debbie has him concerned.

"So now you can maybe stand on a syringe and get hepatitis or accidentally spill some toxins on yourself... or trip over all the urban rubbish that was flushed out from the landscape in a city flush", he said.

"All because the east coast of Queensland dose not treat its storm water run-off to catch all the rubbish before it hits the ocean lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef..

"What is dumped in a lagoon stays in the lagoon washing up and out."
