McVeigh warns Labor will remove agriculture department

LNP state agriculture minister John McVeigh has warned that his ministry could be removed if Labor win the January 31 election.

Speaking a day after Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk's commitment to reduce the number of ministries from 19 to 14, Mr McVeigh said this would put jobs at risk in the agriculture sector.

"Labor demonises agriculture," Mr McVeigh said.

"If they get back in they will do away with (the department of) agriculture and that would put under risk the Gatton Research Station and other research stations such as Kingaroy with implications for the Darling Downs and the Lockyer Valley."

Mr McVeigh said these places "were under the gun" at the time of the last election and he put in place processes to stop them from closing down and instead increase their numbers.

"We had some savings we needed to find but 90 percent of those savings were made in head office in Brisbane because from an agriculture perspective, that's not where the main game is.

Mr McVeigh was speaking at an LNP breakfast this morning at Plainland in support of Lockyer MP Ian Rickuss.

Mr McVeigh said parliament needed members like Mr Rickuss who was a strong supporter of agriculture in his work as chair of parliament's agriculture committee.
