THAT'S it. Armor All's overall award for pole positions in 2017 is headed to Scott McLaughlin. He is this year's qualifying king.

The flying Kiwi put his Shell V-Power Racing Team Ford on pole for Race 17 at the Sydney SuperSprint.

Of course he did: it's only his 12th pole this year. It's only his seventh in a row. It will be his 15th consecutive front row start.

It is the earliest anyone has secured the yearly pole award - and he did it by over two-tenths of a second.

Oh, and he also set the fastest lap a Supercar has ever done around Sydney Motorsport Park.

As Fox Sports host Jessica Yates said: "Amazing doesn't even begin to cover it."

The No.17 Falcon was 0.215 seconds faster than Mark Winterbottom, the Prodrive Racing star's resurgence locking in an all-Ford front row.

Shane van Gisbergen, the only driver who could've deprived McLaughlin the 2017 pole award had he triumphed in qualifying, could only muster third, a further six-hundredths of a second adrift.

Fellow title challengers Fabian Coulthard and Jamie Whincup rounded out the top five, but McLaughlin once again stole the show.

"I'm almost looking forward to the Christmas party with the boys, it's going to be awesome. To drive a car this good is a testament to my team," McLaughlin said.

"I'm really enjoying my relationship with Ludo (Lacroix, his race engineer). He's really pushing me a lot.

"Last night I went back home (after topping Friday practice) and it wasn't the perfect lap and he made me think about it and go through it. He's really guiding me in a good direction and push harder than I ever have."

Tim Slade, Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds were next, Scott Pye registering an impressive top 10 start for Mobil 1 HSV Racing in ninth with Craig Lowndes rounding out the top 10.

The 120km Race 17 starts at 4.25pm on Saturday.
