Man sexually assaulted teens

A ROCKHAMPTON man who raped one teenager and sexually assaulted another has been sent to jail for at least 18 months.

The man, whose name is suppressed to protect the identity of his victims, pleaded guilty to one charge of rape and two counts of sexual assault in Rockhampton District Court yesterday.

Crown Prosecutor Joshua Phillips said the first offence was against his ex-wife's niece and happened on November 11, 2006.

While the niece was living with the man, who at the time was 39 years old, he went into the 16-year-old's bedroom while she was sleeping and began groping her before digitally penetrating her.

She resisted him and he threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident.

The teen told her grandmother what had happened and when the man's wife confronted him the next day, he admitted to the rape.

The frightened teen did not report the crime to police for three years.

On May 5, 2009, the man attacked another teenager, this time his stepson's 14-year-old girlfriend, though the court accepted that he believed she was 16 at the time.

He asked her to watch a porn film with him and after she declined he placed his hands on her waist and kissed her neck and she responded by punching him in the chest and running away.

He followed her and groped her before putting his hand in her underwear.

Defence barrister Tom Polley said the man was unable to explain his actions but was remorseful.

Judge Michael Shanahan sentenced him to three years jail for the rape, and 18 months for the sexual assaults.

He will be eligible for parole on February 7, 2013.
