RADIO personality Dan Anstey is about to embark on a journey to Australia's most impressive man caves for television channel GO!.
Together with actor Shane Jacobson they will delve into the complex mind of the modern male.
We managed to track him down to discuss an interesting motoring addiction.
What was your first car?
It was a Mercedes-Benz 280E that had done 300,000km, was nine years older than me (a 1975 model) and cost a whopping $1000. It was a brilliant car actually, complete with sunroof…hello ladies.
Although after owning it for eight years I finally decided to upgrade (to a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 230E, sensing a pattern?) and gave it to my little brother, who promptly destroyed it within three months. I don't know exactly what he did, but he somehow managed to run it out of oil and seize the engine.
What are you driving now, and what do you love and hate about it?
I'm still only in my second car, the 1987 Mercedes-Benz 230E I mentioned above. It also has a sunroof (ladies… hello?), electric windows, power steering, air-conditioning and comes complete with Bluetooth integration (pretty sure that wasn't standard in the '80s though, although given it's a Mercedes it wouldn't surprise me) all for the low price of $6000 drive-away no more to pay. There's nothing I really hate about it to be honest, although it does burn through the fuel a bit for a four-cylinder car. Then again, it's 27 years old so give it a break. I'm burning through the fuel a bit more too now that I'm 29 (where fuel = custard tarts).
What cars did your family have while you were growing up?
My dad loves his Mercedes (pattern confirmed) and Alfas. He's got the most beautiful 1970 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 that he's painstakingly restored over many years.
There was a setback in 1990 when my brother and I broke into it when it was parked on a hill, released the handbrake and rapidly rolled it in accordance with the laws of gravity into a tree some 100m away. The whole front end was destroyed, and dad was less than impressed. Gave him something to do for the next few decades though so mum was stoked.
What is your greatest frustration on the road?
People not waving when you let them merge. I'm not saying we should bring back capital punishment to deal with this issue but…we should.
Do you have any preferred driving music?
I'm big on The Holidays new album right now, but usually just whatever I've downloaded onto my phone recently.
If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?
Sebastian Vettel. Obvious reasons.
What is your dream car?
The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. I promised my dad I'd buy him one if it was the last thing I ever did; however that was before I found out they retail for around a quarter of a million dollars, which is actually the least of my worries. The real problem is only 500 were ever made... all of which are now, of course, sold. I've since seen the error of my ways and have instead promised to steal him one.
