Man charged after meat cleaver, hammer attack on pokies

POLICE have charged a man after he allegedly damaged several poker machines with a meat cleaver and hammer at a licensed premises in Lidcombe.

Officers said the 60-year-old local man entered Dooley's Catholic Club on Church Street at 9.30am yesterday and allegedly damaged several poker machines with a hammer and meat cleaver.

Police from Flemington Local Area Command were contacted and arrested the man a short distance away without incident.

The officers seized a hammer and meat cleaver from the yard of a nearby unit. The items will undergo forensic testing.

No one was injured during the incident but extensive damage was occasioned to numerous poker machines.

The man was conveyed to Auburn Police Station where he was charged with destroy or damage property; and armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

He was given bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Thursday 18 January 2018.
