A MAN cut off a woman's head before jumping in front of a New York City train in what US media is describing as a murder-suicide.

Early reports suggest a man in his 30s is believed to have beheaded a woman who was in her 60s before landing in front of the train in the Long Island suburb of Farmingdale, east of Manhattan.

NBC 4 New York is reporting the man is believed to be the woman's son.

Passengers on the train were moved on to other trains or buses.

New York officials describe the incident as "domestic", and not a terrorist attack
