Man allegedly drove away from police stop at a walking pace

A MAN accused of being under the influence of drugs while driving allegedly drove away so slowly from a police stop that officers were able to keep talking to him for 500 metres.

QPS said the 26-year-old man was pulled over about 9am in Sandgate on Sunday.

"As police were talking to him, he drove off slowly and police were able to follow the car on foot for about half a kilometre while continuing the conversation," QPS said in a statement.

Police allege the driver began swerving his car across the road, almost hitting cyclists and other cars.

The man then allegedly scraped a police car with his vehicle before abandoning the still-moving car and running into nearby water.

The abandoned car allegedly hit a parked van.

"Flinders Parade was closed to traffic while police negotiated with the man to come out of the water," QPS said.

"Eventually he came out of his own accord and was arrested and transported to Redcliffe Hospital."

The man will now face court on multiple charges including obstruct police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected.
