Mackay's favourite mechanic goes the extra mile

MACKAY'S favourite mechanic is taking home the honours for the second time.

The results are in and Daily Mercury readers voted Heathz Mechanical as Mackay's best mechanic in the paper's "best of" series.

Taking out the top prize for the second time in a row, Justin Heath from Heathz Mechanical said he was was surprised at the win.

"We usually have competitors like Pacey's Mobile Mechanical, and there's another shop down the road that have been open for heaps longer than us. Torrisi's usually give us a good run for our money," he noted.

How does he keep his customers happy? Well, for Mr Heath and his team, it's all about giving his customers quality service.

Mr Heath said he believed it was because he went the extra mile.

"We just try and do the best job we can. If anyone has any issues after they leave here, we fix it for them, we do the right thing," he said.

Starting out with a humble beginning after high school, Mr Heath began an apprenticeship.

"I didn't do too good in school when I was a kid, but I'm pretty good with my hands," he said.

After completing his apprenticeship, Mr Heath spent a few years working for other business around town, before starting Heathz Mechanical with his wife Stacey Heath in 2013.

Mr Heath said, "We're only a young business still, so it's good to see we've grown that much and we're popular because of the work we do here."

He accredits his success to keeping his business humble and his large customer clientele.

"We have a huge base of customers," he said.

Mrs Heath puts their success down to support from customers who "have been behind us from day dot".

Mr Heath agreed. "We do have some very good customers, very loyal ones as well. They're awesome.

Mr Heath said that while the business moved three times the first years, it won't be happening again. They have been in their Endeavour St location for just more than two years.

"We've accumulated too much stuff to move again now. This place is perfect for us, and it's a great location," he said.

While having a business in Mackay was difficult a few years ago, Mr Heath said Heathz Mechanical survived the downturn well, something he again put down to their loyal customers and their dedicated work ethic.

"We worked straight through the downturn, I didn't even have to put anyone off,"he said.

Known as the one stop shop for everything car related, Mr Heath said Heathz Mechanic specialised in everything from oil changes, services, performance work and 'pretty much anything you can think of'.

The top 10 were chosen after a Facebook callout for the best mechanic in Mackay, we then called on our readers to vote and name their number one mechanic.
