Local duo fall short in Grafton

LOCAL sprinters Lifebouy and Going Fine failed to place in yesterday's $130,000 WHK Ramornie Handicap (1200m).

As expected, the pace was too hot for the Shane Randall-trained Going Fine with the 100-1 shot the last past the post.

The Terry McCarthy-trained Lifebouy ran a tough race and was given every chance by apprentice jockey Timothy Bell.

The Ballina-based runner hit the lead with about 300m to go but was swamped in the final stages and finished eighth.

Unfortunately, Bell was caught wide after starting from barrier 10 and it meant last year's third placegetter had a long run to get to the front.

McCarthy was happy with Lifebouy's effort.

“It was a pretty good run. We were a bit unfortunate that he (Bell) was trapped very wide on him so he had a sustained run,” he said.

“When he got to the front for a few strides I thought he might keep going but in the back of my mind I knew he had had a pretty tough run.

“You can't bag the horse's run.

“I'd like to have a go at a couple of decent races with him now; he may even run in the Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m).”

Fernleigh jockey Scott Seamer missed out in the Ramornie on one of the favourites Meet George, which finished second last.

However, his day improved when he rode home the winner of the $40,000 Grafton Guineas (1600m) aboard top weight Okane.
