Latin America's longest civil war may be about to end

COLOMBIA'S Government and rebel group FARC - also known as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - have announced a ceasefire, raising hopes that Latin America's longest civil war is over.

Spanning more than half a century, the conflict has also involved other rebel groups and is estimated to have claimed more than 250,000 lives and displaced nearly seven million people.

"We have successfully reached an agreement for a definitive bilateral ceasefire and end to hostilities," the two sides said in a statement yesterday.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said he hoped to sign a full peace deal by July 20.
