Large storm in Lockyer Valley causes chaos in Gatton

A large storm has caused chaos through the Lockyer Valley when it came through around 3.30pm this afternoon.

It was a narrow escape for the Gatton RSL Club after an  initial report that it was on fire.

The alarm inside the club was activated by a nearby lightning strike before a second hit right outside the premises, near the pedestrian crossing on Crescent Street.

A witness who saw the strike said the sparks looked like a firework.

Workers were evacuated while Queensland Fire and Rescue undertook safety checks and confirmed there was no fire.

However there are reports of damage in Grantham from the same storm including power lines down.

The Bureau of Meteorology said more than 20mm of rain fell across the Lockyer and Brisbane Valleys.

More to come on storm damage in the region.
