Large grass fire burns in Bowen overnight

POLICE are investigating how a large grass fire started in Bowen overnight.

Bowen Fire crews were called to the fire that surrounded Bolt, Pantall and Don streets about 9.30pm.

Acting Station Officer Rees May said when crews arrived the fire covered a space of about 400 metres.

Fire crews conducted back burning to contain the fire and were able to make the area safe about 12.45am.

There was no direct threat to any nearby properties, however Mr May said there was "large volumes of smoke" affecting residents.

Police and Fire Crews are now investigating to how the fire occurred.
