Laidley start off in style

First Grade

Laidley v Strollers/Raiders

The Laidley District First Division side kicked their season off in style at the weekend with an away victory against the newly merged Strollers/Raiders outfit.

Due to play being completely washed out on the opening day, the match was played as a 45 over per side one day match. Laidley won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a very good wicket.

Laidley began cautiously and they were reduced to 2-31 with both openers back in the shed.

However, a match defining partnership between English import Alex Welsh (70) and Michael Sippel (96) set the platform for Laidley to mount an imposing total.

Michael Sippel contributed 96 of the 137 run partnership.

Sippel bludgeoned the Strollers attack to all parts of the ground while Welsh, in his first match in first division, provided perfect support for Sippel. Laidley lost wickets at regular intervals towards the end but managed to keep the run rate going to finish with a very good score of 7/237 from their allotted 45 overs.

Strollers/Raiders were in massive trouble from the outset with Michael Sippel and Ben Gibson ripping the heart out of the top order.

The new joint venture club never recovered after being 3-15 but showed good spirit to reach 207.

Sippel and Welsh with his left arm orthodox again combined to capture six of the Strollers wickets to fall.

Matthew Dean also bowled well and claimed the prized scalp of Strollers/Raiders captain Craig Cumming. Youngster Michael Topp rattled the opposition with a fiery spell of fast bowling which saw him take two wickets for the visiting side. The Laidley side has this weekend off due to the representative Schaffer Shield carnival.

Second Grade

After an impressive first up victory against Strollers/Raiders, the Laidley District Second Division side were looking to continue their good form against Centrals. Centrals won the toss and elected to bat on a typical batting paradise at Bichel Oval.

Missing a few regulars from their bowling attached, the Laidley side toiled hard all afternoon and restricted Centrals to 8/258 from 82 overs.

Captain Chris Johnson led the way with three wickets.

The Blue Dogs will be looking to wrap up the remaining two wickets before setting about chasing down the Centrals total for a first innings victory.
