Laidley back in action

AN early morning walk down Laidley's main street on Sunday revealed a town back on its feet and slowly recovering from last week's flooding.

The newsagency was back in operation following a massive clean up effort.

The only other businesses still showing signs of damage from the inundation appeared to be the Food Works supermarket and the D'Lish Café.

At the Chun Lai Chinese restaurant in Patrick Street, owner Linda Lan was sorting through a pile of containers and plates for anything salvageable.

Linda said she had lost everything including furniture and food stored in three freezers and four refrigerators.

“On Thursday evening the fire brigade people hosed the mud out of the building,” she said.

“Then they came back on Friday to lift up the refrigerators knocked over in the water.

“During the day, people passing by would stick their head in the door and offer to help.

“Although I am very sad about what has happened, I realise there are many more people in the same situation.”

Linda said she had no idea if the restaurant would ever open again for business, saying it all depended on the building's owner.

“If the owner decides to press on, we will be back in business as soon as we can.”
