Labor hits out at comments that NDIS was reckless spending

SENIOR Labor figures have hit out at comments from the head of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's business advisory council that spending money on the National Disability Insurance Scheme was reckless.

Opposition disability reform spokeswoman Jenny Macklin on Tuesday called for Mr Abbott to reject Maurice Newman's comments about the scheme.

Mr Newman made the comment during a speech on Monday night calling for public spending across education, health, and disability to be reined in.

The chairman of the advisory council also called for reform of workplace laws, arguing the economy was "running on empty".

Ms Macklin defended the NDIS, saying Mr Abbott had committed to funding it, vowing the Labor Party would fight any reduction in spending.

But Mr Abbott said on Tuesday he did not plan to reduce total spending on the scheme "over the forward estimates", but would not detail how the funds would be divided.
