Kiwis take all the honours at IRB awards night

NEW Zealand rugby has signed off on a perfect 2014 by scoring its second consecutive clean sweep of the International Rugby Board awards.

Steve Hansen was named coach of the year for the second straight time, the All Blacks, winners of all 14 of their matches, were named team of the year for the fourth time running, and No.8 Kieran Read, 28, took out the player of the year award for the first time.

Read followed in the footsteps of 2012 winner, teammate Dan Carter.

He edged out British and Irish Lions and Welsh full-back Leigh Halfpenny, young South African lock Eben Etzebeth, Italian captain Sergio Parisse and All Blacks teammate Ben Smith.

It was the sixth time in 13 years a New Zealander has won the main award and the seventh time the All Blacks coach had been honoured, although Hansen's two gongs leaves him a long way behind predecessor Graham Henry.
