Kiwis playing guessing games over Cardiff pitch

NEW Zealand coach Mike Hesson will tell his players to expect the unexpected when they take on England in the Champions Trophy in Cardiff tonight (AEST).

The Black Caps need to win against the hosts after picking up only one point from their abandoned game against Australia on Friday.

Hesson said he was satisfied with an encouraging performance in Birmingham but said the Kiwis must improve.

He also said that might be difficult on an unpredictable wicket at Sophia Gardens.

"The unknown is we know quite a bit about it, and that it is an unknown," Hesson said.

"It's a real mixture of surfaces - even if you watched 10 games there, they're all very different in terms of what they present.

"We'll go out there, have a look at it and try to guess what's happening."

England was impressive in its eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the tournament opener last Thursday.

The home side has since lost all-rounder Chris Woakes to a side strain but the Kiwi coach said there was plenty of depth in the bowling with Steven Finn replacing Woakes.

Hesson also said England's batting depth was also impressive despite opener Jason Roy in a bad run of form.

The coach said it was important the likes of Trent Boult and Adam Milne continued to be aggressive against the home team's batting line-up as they were in dismissing David Warner for 18, Aaaron Finch (8) and Moises Henriques (18) as the Aussies struggled befor ethe rains came at Edgbaston last week.
