Killer stepdad’s bid to sue lawyers for negligence

A Queensland father serving 20 years for stabbing his stepdaughter to death has launched a legal bid to get the green light to sue his lawyers for negligence, claiming he is an innocent man and should never have been convicted of murder.

Raymond John Mead, 56, who was found guilty by a jury of killing 23-year-old Sherelle Locke at a house in Boronia Heights in Logan City in February 2014, is representing himself in his application to the Supreme Court.

Mead, who is in Townsville prison, needs the court's permission to be allowed to sue his Legal Aid lawyers and barristers, who defended him at trial.

Mead states in his affidavit filed earlier this month that the negligence and incompetence of his lawyers resulted in a miscarriage of justice.

But this is the same argument he made in the Court of Appeal in 2017, and it was rejected.

He also argued in the Court of Appeal that the verdict was unreasonable, but failed to convince the state's highest court that he should have his conviction quashed.

The jury found he stabbed Sherelle at she sat on the couch at about 11.30pm, and then assaulted his ex-wife Marlene telling her she was "next".

But Mead claims Marlene pushed him while he was holding a knife causing him to lose his balance and inadvertently stab and kill Sherelle.

"From the day I was arrested I've continually told the solicitors this was an accident," Mead states in his affidavit filed in the Supreme Court.

Mead also argues in his latest legal bid that Marlene perjured herself while giving evidence against him, and when he complained about this to his lawyer at trial his lawyer told him to "shut" his mouth.

"Six years I've done now for something that was never my fault, I've lost absolutely everything, my family taken away from me, my kids that I absolutely worship the ground they walk on, refused to let me have any contact with," Mead says in his affidavit.

"I'm innocent, in no way did I ever touch Sherelle, attack her, restrain her in any way," Mead states.

At the trial Marlene said Mead threatened to kill her while holding a knife to her throat two years before Sherelle was killed.

When Mead was sentenced Justice Ann Lyons said his actions were "cowardly" and "reprehensible" and he'd shown no remorse.

The case is due in court on July 16.
