Hospitality worker keen for career in the mining industry
WITH determination anyone can achieve their goals in spite of barriers. Just ask Brian Feekings.
Brian is a man who does not let barriers get in his way.
For 20 years, up until 1994, he worked as a merchant seaman with the Australian National Line.
Health issues finished his career there and he became self-employed as an owner operator working in the area of earth moving.
Brian's health deteriorated further and he had to give up work completely.
But after 10 years on a disability support pension, Brian felt he could attempt work again.
Knowing he would need help after a long break, he registered with Jobmatch to help him get back into employment.
Brain was unsure of what he could do, but felt he could have a new career in the mining industry.
Energy Skills Qld was running a course in hospitality/camp operations specifically designed to cater for the mining industry.
Brian saw this as his chance to get a foot in the door. He knew he would gain the skills needed if only he could be given a chance.
After attending the information sessions, he undertook the 13-week, full-time course completing a Certificate II in Hospitality.
Brian is now confident and skilled and ready to start his new career.
He is departing for Western Australia in the near future with contacts in place to give him a start for this new period of his life.
Brian said he was more than ready and willing to go where the work was offered.
"With determination and the support I received through Jobmatch and ESQ, I know I will make a success of my new chosen field of work in the resources sector," Brian said.
Energy Skills Queensland project co-ordinator Kerry Fullarton said this month would see the last lot of engineering graduates funded for resource jobs under the Queensland Workforce Skilling Strategy.
Gympie Engineering Group students will graduate on April 22 at Wide Bay Tafe's Gympie campus.
Ms Fullarton said participants and their families as well as industry and work experience hosts were welcome.
