Keely rolls into next round at Rio world tour event

SURFING: She first caught the eye of the sport's global fan base in Brazil two years ago and now Keely Andrew is enjoying her time in Rio again.

The Sunshine Coast board rider progressed through a round two elimination heat in the world tour event there by beating Brazilian Silvana Lima 13.87 to 11.60.

She's due to meet compatriot Tyler Wright and American Sage Erickson in a non-elimination round three heat on Saturday night.

Andrew's second event on the world tour was at the corresponding stop in 2015, when she raised eyebrows with a fifth placing.

She also finished ninth there last year in her maiden full campaign on tour, when she earned rookie of the year honours.

She's 11th of 17 in the overall standings after three of 10 events this year.

Meanwhile, fellow Sunshine Coaster Julian Wilson was due to meet Portugal's Frederico Morais in round three of the men's event there on Saturday night.

He's 16th of 34 in the overall standings after three of 11 events.
