Calls to drop truck registration

TRUCK registrations are hurting owner-operator drivers who are passing the costs on to farmers and consumers.

Katter's Australian Party MPs Shane Knuth and Rob Katter said Queensland Government's decision against dropping the heavy-vehicle registrations, as they say the National Transport Commission recommended, was hurting small business owners.

"The minister knows that the driver-only trucking operators are quickly exiting the industry because of the high cost of insurance and fuel, but mostly registration, and the transport minister had the opportunity to vote for the commission recommendation to reduce registration but withdrew his support," Mr Knuth said.

However, a spokeswoman for Transport Minister Scott Emerson said registration charges were established on a national basis.

"All states and territories have agreed to increase registration charges by 1.3% next year - which is lower than the Consumer Price Index of 3% to June, 2014," she said.

"Any further decisions about registration must be made at a national level to ensure consistency across the country."

Mr Knuth said the high registration price was driving experienced owner-operators out of business.

"All these cost factors will be passed on to the consumer so we want to get a good outcome for the consumer," he said.

"Likewise it falls back to the grazing industry and the price of transport. If we are able to just bring it down a little bit in some way and give a little bit of relief to the driver-only it'll be a better outcome for all of Queensland."
