PM's decision a kick in the guts for suffering Gympie locals

THE forgotten people of Gympie Region did not rate a mention yesterday when Prime Minister Julia Gillard handed out flood relief to the people who seem to matter more than we do.

Speaking in Ipswich yesterday, Ms Gillard announced major flood mitigation packages in areas apparently deemed to be important by Labor strategists and insurers.

The politically strategic electorates of western Sydney were promised up to $50 million to raise the Warragamba Dam, mitigating floods and putting downward pressure on flood insurance premiums there.

Ipswich also was promised $10 million and Roma $7 million by a Prime Minister who indicated she was acting on advice from the insurance industry.

The problem for Gympie seems to be that our floods occur in predictable areas where insurance has often been seen as too expensive or hard to get - so we do not rate.

Asked why Gympie, hit by four floods in the past year, was not earmarked for immediate flood mitigation funding, Ms Gillard said she would be happy to receive a relief proposal from Gympie.
