PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has addressed her 'dear remaining fellow Australians' on air, confirming the Mayans were right and the 'end of the world is coming'.

However, the 50-second video message was just a spoof.

Ms Gillard participated in a Triple J breakfast show commercial as part of their 'end of the world' celebrations.

It was filmed in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Ms Gillard's office defended her comedic skit by saying, "what Australian doesn't mind a laugh from time to time?"

The Prime Minister explained that the world's impending demise is not caused by the carbon price, but possibly flesh-eating zombies, demonic hell-beasts or K-Pop.

Ms Gillard also said she will 'always fight until the very end' for Australians, and 'at least this means (she) won't have to do Q & A again'.

The jokes were a joint effort between the radio station and Ms Gillard.

According to the Mayan calendar, the world will meet its end on December 21, 2012.
