AT first glance, Joel Griffiths joining the last-placed Sydney FC appears to be a puzzling move.

The 33-year-old has spent the past four years at Beijing Guoan and Shanghai Shenhua, where he scored 34 goals from 94 appearances in the Chinese Super League.

He played alongside stars Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba while at Shanghai.

But Griffiths, who will make his debut with Sydney once the transfer window opens on January 13 next year, believes his new team has a genuine shot at glory.

The 2007/08 A-League Johnny Warren Medallist and Golden Boot winner will begin training with the Sky Blues on Monday.

"Sydney's a big club. I did watch one game at Allianz and I thought it was a position I could give something to the club," Griffiths said.

"The players that they have got I feel can achieve that goal - that is, to be champion.

"The time was right for me to come back to Australia and I'm happy I've got the opportunity to play in front of my family and friends."

Griffiths, who was born and raised in the Sutherland Shire, will be reunited with his twin brother Adam, who joined Sydney FC this season.

Sydney coach Frank Farina believes Griffiths's combination with Alessandro Del Piero up front will make his side's attack difficult to handle.

"He's busy, he's aggressive, he can score goals. A player like Joel alongside Alessandro will be a fantastic combination," Farina said.
