Jockey Gilby dies in hospital

TALENTED Queensland jockey Corey Gilby, who survived being struck by lightning several years ago, has died in Townsville Hospital after a fall during a trial at Julia Creek on Saturday.

The region's racing fraternity was in shock today after the tragic loss of one of its true characters and talents.

Last night, the family of the critically-injured jockey made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support.

Mount Isa-based Gilby had been fighting for his life after suffering a bad fall during a trial gallop at Julia Creek, in north-west Queensland, on Saturday and his family and friends travelled to Townsville to be at his bedside.

Gilby reportedly fell when the horse he was riding went down. Witnesses said it appeared bandages on the horse's legs came loose as they passed the finish line, causing the horse to trip and roll on the jockey several times.
