Jill Singer dies from rare blood disorder, aged 60

VETERAN journalist and broadcaster Jill Singer has passed away.

The sad news was broken on the former Today Tonight host's Facebook page this morning, just months after she revealed a terminal illness.

"Our friend, colleague, teacher, my wife, proud mother and grandmother, lover of life has 'got on with it'," the post read.

"So missed, a bright life who made a difference. Always loved. RIP."

It's less than two months since Singer married lawyer Anthony Brand and four months after she revealed her diagnosis with AL amyloidosis, a rare blood disorder.

"We called it our shotgun wedding. It was one of the most beautiful days of my life," Singer told the Herald Sun of her wedding.

"We met nearly four years ago, went and had dinner and hit it off straight away. We've been together ever since."

At the time, Singer said she had only a matter of months to live.

Jill Singer was a popular broadcast identity and hosted Channel Seven’s Today Tonight.

The Walkley Award winner and respected journalism educator at RMIT University also spoke of the strange relief that came with her diagnosis after almost a year of uncertainty.

There is no cure for the disease, whereby amyloid-forming proteins in the blood attack the organs; in Singer's case, her heart and peripheral nerves.

"I was in so much pain I was actually sobbing and punching my stomach and of course I had no pain relief because I was told there was nothing wrong with me."

"Frankly, it's scary. We know we are mortal, but it's hard to have it in your face," she said in April. "We're at the fingers-crossed stage."

Pam Street posted a tribute to her cousin on her Facebook page on Thursday morning.

"We have just lost my cousin Jill Singer, she has passed away. She was a sweet girl and only 60 years of age," she wrote.

Street went on to write: "Words always fail us at times like this - we know it is hard to say anything really, so here is your love heart Jilly."
